Generating replication ID primary key values for data in Excel prior to importing to Access

    Hello,

I have data in an Excel spreadsheet that I would like to import and append to an Access table. The table uses a replication ID for the primary key. I would like to know if there is a way to generate a replication ID in excel, or, is there a way to import data and have Access automatically generate the primary key.

    Thanks, Grady

A "replication ID" is a special type of autonumber (also called a GUID - IIRC).
Don't try to create the "replication ID" number.
Just import the table. Access will take care of generating the ID.

    Thanks for the reply Steve,

I gave it a shot. I made a test spreadsheet with all the field names from the Access table in the top row including the primary key. I populated the spreadsheet with a single row of new data to test the import. All seemed to go according to plan, but access did spit out an error saying "Unparsable Record" for the blank primary key GUID field. When I looked at the Access table after the import, it appeared that the record had been imported okay... All the fields were populated and Access did generate a new GUID primary key. Why the unparsable error? Thanks.

Hard to know - I don't know what your Excel data/Access table looks like.

Was there an Import error table in Access created? That would tell you the field/column that had the problem..

Please reply to this thread with any new information or opinions.
