Audit Trail - Code on Forms vs Data Access Macros on Table - Access 2013

I've seen guides for both ways of creating an Audit trail...

Is there a reason to use one over the other?
Should one always use Data Access Macros in 2010+?
    Is there any performance difference?

Looking for sort of a best practices approach as the guides I've read don't seem to really have any reason for one over the other and when to use.

If you backwards compatibility to 2007, don't use Data Macros.

Developers who never liked and never used macros would probably say to also stay away from Data Macros. I've never used either.

    Debugging is easier in VBA.
