    Question Queries/SQL

    Hello all,

So I've recently moved my split database back end to an SQL Server 2014 Express. My front end is Access 2013, and all of my queries are located in the forms on the front end. I have a few questions regarding the queries...

    Questions:
1a)Can you use queries in Access front end that are created on a SQL Server back end? If yes, I would greatly appreciate a reference link!
1b)When dealing with my front end, should I create the queries here, or should I create the queries in the SQL Server?
2)Which way will load the forms with the data quicker(performance)?

3)Any pros and cons of using either way?

More info: I'm not sure if this helps at all, but about 90% of my queries are going into forms where data CAN BE edited. When using queries from SQL Server can you edit the data in an Access form?

    Thank you!

What you might want to know about are pass-through queries. Review https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/303968

I thought you can't edit data in a pass-through query?

I just created one and It says in the status bar "This Recordset is not updateable"

I don't know. I've never used. I only ever set links to backends (Access, Oracle, SQL, dBaseIV).

I don't think can set links to queries, only tables.

    Hi,

you can create a view on SQL server and then link them in access as you would link a table.

NoellaG, are you able to edit the data when using a view?

It depends, it's a bit like in access: some views are updateable , some aren't. For instance if you use aggregates (cfr. groups queries in access) the view isn't updateable. You can check the site https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms180800.aspx for more information.
