    Hey Steve,

I just started using access about 6 months ago. I utilized the entire forum community. They are always very helpful and understanding. I still have a ton of questions and request help frequently, but as I learn I always try to help when I know how.

My process of learning (still learning) was to dive in, get stuck, spend 2 hours googling like a madman, then post a well worded in depth call for help. The people here have so much knowledge it is astounding. You are in good hands.

    Hi,

    Rule zero!

"The time spent analysing and planning your project before you even 'put finger to keyboard' is repaid fourfold later in the development."

So, what should be done in this planning stage?

    1. Define what your project should do. This is usually a list of the main reports and their content. Sometimes projects do things other than report so define these if appropriate.
    2. Define your first thoughts on how the information is to be entered, by whom, how frequently.
    3. Is this envisaged as a single-user project (you can have multiple stand-alone copies) or is it a multi-user project with shared data?
    4. Analyse your data. If you are inexperienced or if the project is large then I would recommend producing an Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) before attempting to design a relational database. The ERD will help you further understand your data.
    5. Only then produce a first draft database design - either on paper or use Access to draw it nicely. Test the design by walking through 1, 2 and 3 above to answer how the design fulfils the requirements.
    6. Now you're ready to start.

PS Read up on and adopt a naming convention (suggest Reddick) and a set of standards (not familiar with any published ones - just follow what you like of other people's work) from the start.

I'm willing to help and guide (but not to do the work!) Skype is not appropriate, email works fine and is better than using this forum for exchange of information.

This is the part of the puzzle I should have tattooed on my persons. As things get bigger and bigger and bigger this becomes so important.

Well considering the database i been trying to figure out how to start consist of Multiple functions, A) Estimation program linked to excel sheets for information (unless access can do things like excel)-but i dont think it does. B) Service - either new or repairs (need a parts manufest built for this function i know) C)Final job costing.

My problem is i know i need Alot of tables but dont know how about to build them ie I got an excel sheet with X and Y values then i use a Index/Match to find the data i need. I dont think access can do that so i dont even know if what i want to build can be done.

Thats what i got done thus far - I am trying to plan it first. I also been trying to watch tutorials also but they seem very dry and slow.
