    User Permissions

    Hi

    I have (I think) a complicated question.

I have a database, split into a front and back end. It contains a great deal of information about employees.

I want each employee to be able to record in it their availability for overtime, which would need to be done through Excel (very few of our staff have Access). But in order for Excel to be able to do this, they must have read/write access to the database itself.

However, this would mean that an enterprising individual could easily get access to the whole database, which I don't want.

Is there any way of allowing Excel, or Access (I could build a "restricted" front-end) to access just part of a database?

    Hope this makes sense.

    Chris.

Have you thought of allowing them access to a minimum separate BackEnd that you could then access from your live system?

    That's clever! No, I hadn't!

So I split the back end down into two bits: confidential and non-confidential, then set up the non-confidential stuff as a linked table in the confidential database?

That would be one way, yes. Only your FrontEnd need know about the two BackEnds.
