Using Access 2010 or 2007 Runtime with Terminal Services

    To all,

I have an Access 2003 application that runs in Terminal Services. All users have Access installed on their local PC's.

I want to upgrade the application to Access 2007 or 2010 and move to the Runtime version. I want to learn how the licensing works with Runtime as well as how to make this happen. Suggestions?

    Bill T.

The Access 2007 and 2010 rutime versions are free. No License required to install on a PC or Terminal Service.

Access 2007/2010 work just like Access 2003 on a Terminal Server.

Are you currently using the Access 2003 runtime?

No. Not using runtime at all.

Sorry it took forever for me to notice your reply.

I'm running 2010 using terminal services. The only thing I did that made it easier was creating a login batch file that creates each user their own copy of the front end database. Using environment variables %USERNAME%.mde in the shortcut to link them all to their own copy.

    Hello,
I want to setup a windows server 2008 RC2 with remote desktop services.
On that server I want to install access runtime 2010 to give remote desktop home users the ability to run a database on the server. These users log on to the server from their homes and they don't have a access license. Do you think this is possible?

I look at it like this:
A terminal server is just a very powerful workstation that can be shared by multiple users at teh same time. You basically set up a Terminal Server like you would any other workstation on your network. Yes a workstation. You do not want to run terminal service in application mode on your main server(s). Just like you should never let a user log onto a server and user it as a workstation.

The remote device is mainly uses the peripherals. The only software required on the remote device is a RDP client. The reason I keep saying remote device is that y can use any hardware that will run a RDP client. This includes smartphones, iPhone, iPad, Macs, Android Tablets, and of course Windows devices and Windows PCs.

Windows XP and later comes with the Windows Remote Desktop client. You can install a Microsoft's RDP client on Windows 98 and Windows 2000. I use an old laptop running Windows 98 with 640 meg RAM to RDP into a terminal server and run Office 2010. Office 2010 will not even install on Windows 98 but that does not matter since all the software is installed and runs on the Terminal server.

If your home users have a Windows XP pro or later PC and an internet connection then they have everything they need to connect to your terminal server. They will be able to run any of the software installed on the terminal server that they have permissions to use.
