Sorting in Reports

I am trying to sort a field in a report, but the sort function is only allowing me to sort by the value of the field (smallest to largest). I assume this is because what I'm sorting is from a drop-down field. Is there any way to get this field to sort alphabetically? I've attached a screen shot to show what I mean.

I presume [Vendor Type] is a number datatype? You would have to sort on the vendor type description (a text value) to get alphabetical.
