Default lookup values in backend tables

Is there any good reason to use Combo boxes with lookup queries in the design of backend tables? Or should ALL queries be in the front end?

I have a fairly large DB that was originally developed in Access95 (now using 2007). It is split FE/BE.

Some of the BE table data use combo boxes with saved queries as data source. The queries, however, are in the FE (with a few exceptions).

Should all saved queries be in the FE? If so, should the source in the backend table be left blank?

I am no authority on this matter, but I hear that you should not use lookups with the tables.

Here is one forum I came across discussing this topic.
