Question ODBC and Long Query Time

I'm using Access 2003 to connect via ODBC to a SQL box here in the building / very close IP wise.
My problem is when I do a search for a specific name (table sorted by index #), is it takes several seconds. If I have Task Manager open and looking at the Networking page, I see the connection is running at about 20-25 percent with several hundred K Bytes / Second being sent to my machine. (Lots of network traffic)

Is this "normal" for this sort of connection?
(Note - The table is badly designed with MANY columns so there can be a lot of data involved in a query. We hope to be getting away from this table in a few months, but we have to deal with the inital system migration now.)

Is there a way I can minimize the traffic?

Thanks
Paul
